We all enjoy seeing the little ones live out their Star Wars fantasy. And some of us enjoy doing it ourselves. But there *is* something super fun about seeing couples do it together!
So grab your significant other, your better half, your gentleman caller, or your lady friend and get started on your Star Wars couples Halloween costume!
Luke & Leia
As awesome as Rey is, and she is awesome, I am still partial to Princess Leia. Her A New Hope outfit – the white dress and buns – in one of the most iconic outfits of all time!
This one take a bit of sewing but look AMAZING!
No Princess Leia costume is complete without the Princess Leia buns! These buns are a bit beyond my braiding skills so here are some helpful hints from The Sewing Rabbit, a Me Sew Crazy blog.
Luke’s is a pretty easy costume to make. Take your pick between Luke on Tatooine or Luke in his Jedi outfit.
Luke on Tatooine is pretty easy since all you need is a white top (bathrobe or even karate top), khaki pants and a brown belt.
If you don’t already have them you are likely to find them at your local thrift store.
Jedi Luke’s outfit is also pretty easy to make.
Luke’s all black Jedi outfit is a no brainer. But without a light saber your little one will look a bit like Johnny Cash. Not a bad thing, but not Star Wars.
Enter the the Jedi tunic and robe. With the Jedi tunic and robe your little one will instantly be recognized at the Jedi Master they think they are!
Here are a few helpful resources:
No Jedi costume is complete without a light saber! Don’t have one yet? You still have time to get one from Amazon, and they are pretty affordable!
Han & Leia
When I was Star Wars a New Hope as a kid (I was 7 years old) I wanted to be Luke Skywalker. when I saw the Empire Strikes Back (I was 10 years old) I relaized that Han Solo actually got the girl. This budding relationship grows deeper in Return of the Jedi (I was now 13 years old). Once I realize that Han got the girl – Princes Leia – I then wanted to be Han!
Couple the costume for Leia above with these Han costume or costume items and you have an awesome Star Wars couple’s costume!
As we see in the pic below you can get away with a white or tan long sleeve t-shirt, a dark vest, blue jeans/pants, boots and a belt. It seems to me that the belt and holster can really make or break this outfit.
Here is an official pretty easy how to from Star Wars (starwars.com)
Here are a few helps from the Stylish Geek for Han’s belt & holster and Han’s vest.
Han & Chewy
Han and Leia are amazing, but let’s be honest for a moment. Han and Chewy are awesome-er!
Combine this easy Chewbacca idea with the Han costume above and you too (you two?) can make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs!
Chewbacca is pretty easy. While not the most accurate costume, but certainly fun, these Chewbacca pajamas , when combined with the now infamous Chewbacca Mask, make for an entertaining Chewbacca costume.
Please note that the snow, swagger, and attitude sold separately.
Sharing God’s Story
Shopping for and making these Star Wars costumes is a great time to share God’s story.
- Remind your kids that just like Anakin/Darth Vader was “redeemable,” so are they. And no matter what they do, God still loves them and died for them.
But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- Remind your kids that God still loves them when they sin, just like Luke still loved his dad (Anakin/Vader).
- Discuss light and darkness. They are not just ideas in Star Wars, the bible talks a lot about light and darkness.
For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
First John 2:9
- Remind them that God loves them the way Han Solo loved his son Ben, Kyle Ren. We see this in how Han Solo was willing to sacrifice himself to try to save his son. This also goes for Anakin/Vader. He sacrificed himself to save Luke.
- Remind them of John 15:13
No one has greater love than this—that one lays down his life for his friends.
- Show them that when Luke uses the Force, it’s a picture – a parable – about how we walk in faith.
For we live by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7
