  1. All of these are all Amazon affiliate links, and most are Amazon Prime. Using these links won’t cost you anything extra, but Amazon will share a small percentage with me. Yes, this helps keep Reel Parables up and running, but more importantly, it helps support missionaries and mission organizations. Check out my About page for more info.

Marvel/Avengers

Just about all Super Heroes point to Jesus, the ultimate Super Hero.

If your kid is dressing up as their favorite Super Hero, remind them that Super Heroes pint to Jesus because they show us Philippines 2.

Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself. Each of you should be concerned not only about your own interests, but about the interests of others as well.
Philippians 2:3-4

Groot steals the show and steals our hearts.

Why? Because he shows us what Philippians 2 looks like!

He humbles himself for the other Guardians. He was willing to die to save them.

Sound familiar?

Not only that, but we see the ressurected little baby Groot!

Yeah, Groot shares God’s story!

Rocket Raccoon

Drax

Wolverine

Cyclops

Star Wars

In my opinion the first six Star Wars episodes are all about he rise, fall, and redemption of Dark Vader. Remind your kids that anyone – even Darth Vader – can be redeemed!

Finding Dory/Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo is basically a retelling of Jesus’ Lost Parables from Luke 15.

Nemo is caught because he disobeyed his father. But his father still loves his prodigal son and chases after him!

Remind your kids that THAT is how God loves them!

But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinnersChrist died for us.
Romans 5:8

Frozen

Much like Finding Nemo, Frozen is very much a retelling of a Lost Parable. Else runs away. Her sister, Anna, runs after her to save her.

Remind your kids that THAT is how God loves them!

But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinnersChrist died for us.
Romans 5:8

The Incredibles

Yeah, you can share God's story with the Incredibles!
Yeah, you can share God’s story with the Incredibles!

The Incredibles, much like most ensemble superhero teams, show us how the Chruch works (or should work).

Mr. Incredible could NOT save the day on his own. He needed all the heroes to use THEIR GIFTS so that THEY could accomplish their mission.

This is how the Church SHOULD work, according to I Corinthians 12.

But as a matter of fact, God has placed each of the members in the body just as he decided. If they were all the same member, where would the body be? So now there are many members, but one body.
I Corinthians 12:18-20

If your kid is dressing up as their favorite Super Hero, remind them that Super Heroes pint to Jesus because they show us Philippines 2.

Sharing God’s Story

Star Wars

  • Remind your kids that just like Anakin/Darth Vader was “redeemable,” so are they. And no matter what they do, God still loves them and died for them.

But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

  • Remind your kids that God still loves them when they sin, just like Luke still loved his dad (Anakin/Vader).
  • Discuss light and darkness. They are not just ideas in Star Wars, the bible talks a lot about light and darkness.

For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
Psalm 18:28

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:5

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8:12

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
John 12:46

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
Ephesians 5:8

Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
First John 2:9

  • Remind them that God loves them the way Han Solo loved his son Ben, Kyle Ren. We see this in how Han Solo was willing to sacrifice himself to try to save his son. This also goes for Anakin/Vader. He sacrificed himself to save Luke.
  • Remind them of John 15:13

No one has greater love than this—that one lays down his life for his friends.
John 15:13

  • Show them that when Luke uses the Force, it’s a picture – a parable – about how we walk in faith.

For we live by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7

Finding Nemo and Finding Dory

  • Finding Nemo is very much a retelling of the Lost Parables from Luke 15. Finding Nemo is the parable of the lost fish.
  • Nemo is literally “caught up in his sin.” He disobeys his dad, Marlin, and is caught by a diver with a net.
  • How do you know Marlin still loves Nemo, even though he disobeyed? Because he went looking for him!
  • Remind your kids that they are like Nemo and lost because of their sin.
  • But also remind them that Jesus loves them the way Marlin loved Nemo!
  • And just like Marlin went looking for Nemo, because he loved him, Jesus is looking for them (and died to save them)!
  • Remind your kids that God loves them the way Marlin loved Nemo.
  • Play a game of hide and seek. When you find your child, give them a HUGE hug and tell them how much you love them. Then remind them that God loves them even more than that!

I love, love, love how Finding Nemo (and Finding Dory to some degree) shares God’s story. I love it so much a wrote a devotional, Sharing God’s Story with Finding Nemo, that you can use to share God’s story with your kids and students.
