So what’s taking so long?
Today is Day 13 of a trial testing my new 15 Day training curriculum. That’s 120 hours of training development, writing, filming (it is very visual), editing, publishing, etc.
It is the largest training project that I have ever worked on. It is probably the biggest thing I will ever do in my current job.
Due to this project I have lost sleep (I am getting too old for all-nighters), fought sickness, and missed every Boy Scout camp out since October.
It has been a crazy busy time.
But it is worth it.
Because while my boss (and my company) would say I do this for the customer, I do not.
I do this for my offshore agent.
Yes, it will help my customers have a better experience, but it will change my agent’s life.
That’s my work story.
As this Fast Company article points out story is powerful.
Duke suggests that if parents want to raise confident kids, it’s important to tell them stories about their family and their beginnings. And the most powerful type of narrative–there are three major ones–is one where the family has ups and downs, as opposed to all ups or all downs.
Story is important in family development,
Story is important to work team development.
I would add that story is important to individual work projects.
In Costa Rica I once had a young woman in my class in her late 20′s who lived with her parents. When I heard she lived with her parents I assumed she was a stereotypical America 20-something slacker.
Little did I know that her parents actually lived with her! Her father had cancer and could not work so she – as a 20-something single woman – let her parents move in with her. She, as with most of the students in my class, had two jobs or were trying to get two jobs just to make ends meet.
That is the student I am training. That is the student I am working so hard for.
If my training can help that student get and keep a job I am doing more than training tech support agents, I am changing lives.
Yes, story is very important. Not just in teaching about God and the bible, but in shaping how – and why – I do my job.
This part of my work story is almost over.
When it is Reel Parables will be back sharing God’s story with movies.
