Halloween Costume Ideas – Star Wars for Kids

(Check our all of our movie-inspired Halloween costume ideas, easy ways to connect with your kids, and simple ways to share God’s story!)

I love Star Wars.

I saw Star Wars in the theater when I was 7 years old. Straightaway I wanted to be Luke Skywalker. I did my best to cobble together a Luke Skywalker like outfit. I even made Luke’s binoculars about of two toilet paper rolls!

Here are some great Star Wars Halloween costumes for kids. (You can also find adult costume here!)

OK, I gotta be honest… I remember him being much cooler than this!

Luke Skywalker

Luke’s is a pretty easy costume to make. Take your pick between Luke on Tatooine or Luke in his Jedi outfit.

Luke on Tatooine

Ah, that's more like it.
Ah, that’s more like it.

Luke on Tatooine is pretty easy since all you need is a white top (bathrobe or even karate top), khaki pants and a brown belt.

If you don’t already have them you are likely to find them at your local thrift store.

Melly Sews has two great How To resources to help you out.

Jedi Luke

Jedi Luke’s outfit (or your young little Jedi’s outfit) is also pretty easy to make.

Luke’s all black Jedi outfit is a no brainer. But without a light saber your little one will look a bit like Johnny Cash. Not a bad thing, but not Star Wars.

Enter the the Jedi tunic and robe. With the Jedi tunic and robe your little one will instantly be recognized at the Jedi Master they think they are!

No Jedi costume is complete without a light saber! Don’t have one yet? You still have time to get one from Amazon, and they are pretty affordable!

Princes Leia

Here’s a parenting tip: let’s stay away from Leia’s metal bikini.

😉

Princess Leia’s white dress is probably the easiest to make and (besides the metal bikini) one of her most recognizable outfits.

Sharing God’s Story

Shopping for and making these Star Wars costumes is a great time to share God’s story.

  • Remind your kids that just like Anakin/Darth Vader was “redeemable,” so are they. And no matter what they do, God still loves them and died for them.

But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

  • Remind your kids that God still loves them when they sin, just like Luke still loved his dad (Anakin/Vader).
  • Discuss light and darkness. They are not just ideas in Star Wars, the bible talks a lot about light and darkness.

For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
Psalm 18:28

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:5

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8:12

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
John 12:46

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
Ephesians 5:8

Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
First John 2:9

  • Remind them that God loves them the way Han Solo loved his son Ben, Kyle Ren. We see this in how Han Solo was willing to sacrifice himself to try to save his son. This also goes for Anakin/Vader. He sacrificed himself to save Luke.
  • Remind them of John 15:13

No one has greater love than this—that one lays down his life for his friends.
John 15:13

  • Show them that when Luke uses the Force, it’s a picture – a parable – about how we walk in faith.

For we live by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7

What did I miss?

Movies + Halloween + Costumes = AWESOME!

Dressing up for Halloween and movies go together.

Sure, kids can get away with dressing up as their favorite superhero or heroine pretty much anytime they want, but on Halloween us adults can get away with it also!

As cool as that is – and it *is* cool – Halloween often sneaks up on me and I miss my opportunity to rock a cool costume.

Not. This. Year!

This year I am helping us plan ahead!

Over the next few weeks I will share a ton of do-it-yourself movie-based costume ideas (and a few buy-it-yourself ideas) for both kids and adults. I’ll even throw in some last-minute ideas for those of us who will be surprised that October 31 is already upon us!

With each post I will share at least two things:

  1. Links to resources to help you create the perfect movie based Halloween costume.
  2. A few easy ways to share God’s story with the selected movie or character.

FYI – I will stay away from scary and evil characters, as well as, with very few exceptions, the “bad guys.” I mean, Loki isn’t *always* a bad guy, right?
